ABFutTOTW and promo investing: buying before the squad is announced
How Team of the Week and promo squads move card prices, why the money is made before the announcement, and how to manage the risk.
When a player gets a Team of the Week card, two things happen to their existing cards. The gold version gets pulled out of packs less often for a week, so supply falls. And the player is suddenly in front of everyone, so demand rises. Prices go up. The difficulty is that by the time the squad is on screen, most of that move has already happened.
Where the edge actually is
The profitable window is before the announcement, which means investing on likely inclusions rather than confirmed ones:
- Weekend performances. A hat-trick or a man-of-the-match display in a big league on Saturday is the clearest signal there is.
- Players about to leave packs. When a special version drops, the old version becomes harder to pack and the existing supply stops growing.
- Promo themes. League-based or nation-based promos lift every card that fits the theme, not only the ones in the squad.
How to run it
- Pick two or three names, not ten. This is a concentrated bet and spreading it thin only spreads the losses.
- Buy Monday or Tuesday. TOTW lands Wednesday; you want to be in before the market prices it.
- Sell into the hype, not after it. The peak is usually within a day of the announcement. Holding for one more rise is how most of these trades turn into losses.
- Set the sell price when you buy. Deciding to sell while watching the price climb is the hardest thing in trading; decide in advance and let the filter do it.

- Open the player in the Market tab and read the hourly graph. You are looking for a card that has not moved yet — if it already spiked, you are late.
- Create a filter on that specific player with a hard buy-now limit and the sell price you decided on.
- Keep the purchase limit to what you can afford to be wrong about. Cards you cannot sell are coins you cannot use for the next trade.
The risk, stated plainly
This is the highest-variance method in FUT trading. You are buying on a prediction about a squad you have not seen. When the player is not included, the card usually falls back to where it was or slightly below, because everyone who bought on the same guess sells at the same time. Use a small part of your coins, never the part you need for anything else.
